A former barrister, Ian was called to the Bar in 1967, commencing practice in the Midlands and Oxford Circuit in 1970. He has since worked as a barrister, a judge and an academic. He was a lecturer in Law at Southampton University from 1966–70, and at LSE from 1970–88. He served as a Recorder from 1994–99 before becoming a Circuit Judge, a position he held until 2014, and during which he heard a wide range of criminal cases. He has also served as the UK Delegate to the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
